Your birthday

A few things you might not know.

Same generation.
Two names.

Millennials are also called Gen Y. If you’ve used both names, you’ve been talking about the same people.

Not always
twenty years.

Baby Boomers cover 19 birth years. Gen X and Millennials each span 16. There’s no one-size-fits-all length.

Still a Millennial
at eighty.

More birthday candles won’t change your generation. Your birth year decides the group, so you never age out of it.

Let’s rewind.

Pick a decade. See what was brand new.

1980s

Big buttons, little screens, and games worth taking turns for.

1985

The NES comes home

The NES made its North American debut in 1985. Its Japanese counterpart, the Family Computer, had arrived two years earlier. Time to find Player 2.

1989

The Game Boy tags along

Nintendo’s Game Boy reached the U.S. in 1989, putting interchangeable game cartridges in a handheld. Your next game could come along for the ride.

1990s

A couple of words. A new console. Plenty to talk about.

1992

The first text says hello

The first SMS was sent on December 3, 1992, from a computer to a phone. Its entire message: “Merry Christmas.” Two words with quite a future.

1994

Hello, PlayStation

The original PlayStation launched in Japan on December 3, 1994. North America and Europe joined the game in 1995. Those little discs had big adventures inside.

2000s

First came more songs. Then a whole lot more than phone calls.

2001

A thousand songs, one pocket

Apple announced the first iPod on October 23, 2001, promising room for up to 1,000 songs. That little scroll wheel had a lot of playlists ahead.

2007

The iPhone joins the chat

The first iPhone went on sale in the U.S. on June 29, 2007. A phone, a music player, and the web could share one pocket.

2010s

Touchscreens grew, and the living-room console learned a new trick.

2010

The iPad makes an entrance

The first Wi-Fi iPad reached U.S. stores on April 3, 2010. Browsing, books, and games got a bigger touchscreen to call home.

2017

One console, two ways to play

Nintendo Switch launched on March 3, 2017, with a neat party trick: move the same game from the TV to a handheld screen. Take your turn anywhere.

There’s more to the story.
